‘Wow, there really is a baby in there”
These were Andrew’s words after we got to hear that baby’s heartbeat today for the first time. That was a really, really exciting moment b/c I hadn’t had any real “proof” of the baby recently, aside from the ultrasound at 6.5 weeks– and the baby has grown and developed a lot since then. Attached is the ultrasound from May. The baby is but only a little seed shape (there is an arrow that points to it) at that time! Now at 14.5 weeks, it would actually look like a baby.

What wonderful news! I’ve never heard an in-utero heart beat, but knowing that Baby Fidler (Ethan) is in there and doing well must be amazing. Do you have a girl’s name picked out, just in case?

You hear it through a device called a doppler. It was really cool. Ironically enough, when the midwife was searching for a heartbeat, she said if it was really hard to find it would be a boy; then she found it right away, so now she’s referring to the baby as a girl. Why? B/c she had 3 boys whose heartbeats were tricky; so not any science to that. We just have to wait until my 20 week ultrasound (Aug. 20th-ish) to find out for sure. If it’s a girl we’re playing with the name Eliza Marie, but I’m not 100%

Yeah, I don’t think I’d put a lot of faith in determining the sex of the baby by simply being able to find the heart beat readily. I thought heart beats were found according to where the baby is lying the uterus. Are they anterior or posterior in the abdomen. Do you care whether you have a girl or a boy? I’m sure either one will be a welcome addition to your and Andy’s life. Can I start buying baby clothing yet??! :) LOL

! I have my ultrasound scheduled now for the 20th at 3pm, officially. No, we don’t care which gender the baby is. I don’t think their position makes any difference as to the gender either; it’s sort of an old wives tale to determine sex based on the position… Right now my baby is so small (4″) it’s just swimming/floating around. That was another thing– when we heard the heartbeat, there was also another noise that was the baby moving to a different position.

i think you should wait and let the gender be a surprise at birth!

Amy, I’m so excited for you. I think Ethan sounds like a great name. If he keeps you awake at night, you can always claim that he takes after Andy. Andy was certainly the baby who knew how to make his presence known to the world. Eliza is a beautiful name as well, but I’d stick with your gut feeling. Female intuition has to be good for something after all. :)
